Winnipeg sits on heavy clay that swells when it's wet and shrinks when it dries. Over a season the ground under your yard genuinely moves — which is why patios laid on a thin sand bed start dipping within three or four years, and why walls built without drainage lean toward the yard. Our answer is depth and separation: 8 to 12 inches of excavation, geotextile between soil and base, and 6 to 10 inches of granular base compacted in lifts — not dumped and rolled once.

Manitoba's frost line runs roughly four feet deep. Water in the soil freezes, expands, and lifts whatever sits on top of it — then thaws and drops, never evenly. That cycle is what cracks poured concrete and tilts deck posts. It's also the argument for pavers over a slab: a slab just cracks, and a crack is a replacement, not a repair.

Winnipeg is flat, clay doesn't drain, and every spring the entire snowpack melts at once. If your lot isn't graded to move that water away from the house, it pools — against your foundation, in the low corner, under the new patio somebody just built on top of the problem. Regrading runs $500–$5,000; full-lot drainage around $2,500–$5,000. Compare that to water in a basement.
